November Newsletter

With La Costa Canyon in Southern California, Holiday Edge in Oregon, and NYPDL December in New York taking place this coming weekend, we are rapidly approaching the half-way point of the season. It’s a good time for some updates!

Written Ballot

Our Fall Voting Period begins today and runs until the end of Monday, December 6. During this period, our membership can have a say in determining the structure of league rules and the general direction of our league. The Written Ballot, containing seven proposals, has been emailed to all member school representatives.

All eligible voters are listed on our roster in green. If you are not an eligible voter yet, you may cast a provisional ballot, which will be counted if you finalize your voting eligibility before the end of the voting period. For questions, contact npdl.board+secretary@gmail.com

Resources

Our intrepid Curriculum Director is putting together a parli Q&A session, tentatively scheduled for December 7. Please spread the word! If interested, please fill out this form in advance.

In the meantime, our student correspondents have been working hard on updating our resolutions database. If you’re a tournament director and your tournament isn’t yet included in our database, please email the resolutions to npdl.board+reporting@gmail.com

Our next goal is to put together a round recordings database. If you are a parli coach or alum, please consider volunteering for our Recordings Coordinator position to spearhead this effort. Especially for debaters from smaller programs who can’t afford to attend as many tournaments, being able to access high-level parli rounds on YouTube can be incredibly valuable.

Calendar Updates

Our tournament calendar has now been updated with the auto-approved tournaments for the Spring semester. If you don’t see a tournament on there, but believe it should count for points, please encourage the tournament director to fill out our application.

The NPDL Tournament of Champions will take place April 8-10. If Proposal 7 on our Written Ballot passes, it will run online.

Minutes

All Board meeting minutes have now been posted on our forum.

October 24 league meeting minutes can be found here.. If you believe the minutes misrepresent any of the comments you made at the meeting, please email npdl.board+secretary@gmail.com by the end of December.

The "Judge Conflicts" proposal passed 41-20.

The "Written Ballot" proposal passed by unanimous consent. It will now govern how we run this week’s voting period.

The "Evidence Rules" proposal was tabled 28-27. It was subsequently dropped in favor of the "Ban Citations & Allow Internet Prep" written ballot proposal, which was developed based on the community members’ feedback at the league meeting and the November 2 Board meeting.
