January Newsletter

We hope everyone is getting a chance to relax over the winter holidays. Liam certainly has! As we’re gearing up for another semester of debate, it’s time for another newsletter.

NPDL Nationals

The first annual NPDL National Championship will be held online April 14-16. Preliminary rounds will begin Friday after school and conclude Saturday night. Later elimination rounds will take place Sunday, along with the Spring Meeting of Members. The tournament will be open to all teams from NPDL member and observer schools. Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey that we used to schedule the tournament.

NPDL Tournament of Champions

The fifth annual NPDL Tournament of Champions will be held online March 31-April 2.

Starting next season, the Board intends to have TOC return to in-person, while Nationals remain permanently online. The site rotation schedule aims to host the 2024 TOC in the New York Tri-State Area, the 2025 TOC in the SF Bay Area, and the 2026 TOC either in Oregon or in Greater Los Angeles. If your school is located in one of those areas, it’s time to start thinking about applying to host!

A Call for Tournament Staff

If you are interested in serving on the staff of either Nationals or TOC, click here to apply. The Board will be reviewing staff applications at its January 10 meeting, so please do your best to submit your application by January 9.

Even if you’ve never worked at a tournament before - reach out, and we will pair you up with experienced tournament organizers who will catch you up to speed.

Legislature

All Board meeting minutes have now been posted on our forum.

Minutes for the Fall 2022 meeting of members can be found here. If you believe the minutes misrepresent any of the comments you made at the meeting, please email npdl.board+secretary@gmail.com by the end of January.

The results of the Fall 2022 Written Ballot are summarized below:

Proposal 3 (Volunteer Judges) has been neither approved nor rejected, and is therefore tabled. We will have an up-or-down vote on it at our next meeting of members on April 16.

All the other proposals have been approved.

Scrimmages

With the passage of Proposal 2, scrimmages no longer automatically create judge conflicts. The first NPDL inter-school scrimmage is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 11AM - 1PM (Pacific time), i.e. 2PM - 4PM (Eastern time).
